Must read

Shillong, Dec 2: World AIDS Day, which falls on December 1 every year, was first observed in 1988 to raise awareness about HIV and AIDS while paying tribute to the victims. The day was also celebrated in Tura and Nongpoh on Monday under the theme, “Take the rights path: My health, my rights”.

In Tura the celebration was held at the District TB Centre with the participation of medical experts and health officials. Among the attendees were Dr. Riksilchi M. Sangma, In-charge District TB Officer for West Garo Hills, Dr. Icylda A. Sangma, Medical Officer, ARTC Tura Civil Hospital, Dr. Silberth Sangma, Senior Medical Officer and Dr. Sombari Boro, Joint Director of Health Services, Garo Hills Division.

Dr. Riksilchi M. Sangma highlighted the close connection between HIV and tuberculosis (TB), explaining that HIV weakens the immune system, making individuals 20 times more likely to contract TB. She emphasized the importance of screening all HIV-positive individuals for TB to ensure early intervention.

Dr. Icylda A. Sangma elaborated on the transmission of HIV, including sexual contact, sharing needles, and blood transfusion. She also spoke about the availability of the Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) Centre at Tura Civil Hospital, which has made treatment more accessible compared to the earlier need to travel to Shillong. She stressed the importance of community cooperation in fighting HIV/AIDS.

Dr. Sombari Boro urged the public to share knowledge about HIV/AIDS and emphasized the role of community support in combating the stigma and discrimination associated with the disease. He called for collective action to address the issue effectively.

In Nongpoh, the District Integrated Strategy for HIV/AIDS (DISHA), in collaboration with the Meghalaya AIDS Control Society (MACS), observed World AIDS Day at Dorbar Hall, Laban Saro Umroi, Ri Bhoi District.

The event was attended by Damanbait Lamare, MLA of Umroi Constituency, alongside Rangkynsai Kharbuki, MDC of Umroi, Dr. A. Kharduid, District Medical and Health Officer of Ri Bhoi District and Dr. E. Kalwing, District AIDS Control Officer.

In his address, MLA Damanbait Lamare stressed the importance of awareness and personal responsibility in preventing HIV/AIDS. He urged individuals to avoid risky behaviors and to create inclusive communities free from stigma and discrimination against those living with HIV.

The event also featured a Free Medical Checkup and Screening Camp organized by the Health Department, providing essential healthcare services to the public.
