Meghalaya Must Take Proactive Steps in Environmental Protection, Says Opposition Chief Whip Ronnie V. Lyngdoh

Shillong, Oct 10: Ronnie V. Lyngdoh, the Opposition Chief Whip of the Meghalaya Legislative Assembly, has expressed grave concern over the impacts of climate change, attributing the recent floods and landslides in West and South Garo Hills to human activity.

Speaking about the devastation, he emphasized that it is not just a local issue but a global crisis, and urged the state to take immediate action.

“It’s very unfortunate what happened in Meghalaya, especially in the Garo Hills. But this is not confined to our state alone; it is a worldwide phenomenon. We need to wake up before it’s too late. Human activities are largely responsible for this,” Lyngdoh remarked.

He called on the state to adopt a proactive stance, rather than merely reacting when disasters strike. “We must take proactive action and nip these issues in the bud by promoting cleaner energy and increasing our green cover. Other states have already imposed restrictions on the number of years a vehicle can operate, but unfortunately, many of the discarded vehicles from those places are being sold to Meghalaya. We are yet to wake up to this reality,” he added.

Lyngdoh highlighted the urgent need for Meghalaya to embrace clean energy and alternative fuels to combat climate change. He also urged the government to implement stricter regulations on tree cutting and to actively participate in global environmental protection efforts to prevent further climate-related disasters. “It’s high time we wake up,” he said.
