Guwahati, July 13: The Northeast states have displayed diverse levels of achievement in their quest to meet the Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).
According to the SDG India Index 2023-24, released on Friday, Meghalaya and Nagaland are classified in the “Performer” category, while the other states in the region are categorized as “Front Runners.”
This index, in its fourth edition, serves as the primary tool for assessing national and subnational progress towards the SDGs, tracking 113 indicators aligned with the Ministry of Statistics and Programme Implementation’s National Indicator Framework (NIF). It computes goal-wise scores for the 16 SDGs and generates composite scores for each state and union territory.
The report was unveiled by Suman Bery, Vice Chairperson of NITI Aayog, along with other notable figures including B. V. R. Subrahmanyam, CEO of NITI Aayog; Shombi Sharp, UN Resident Coordinator in India; Dr. Yogesh Suri, Senior Advisor at NITI Aayog; and Isabelle Tschan Harada, Deputy Resident Representative of UNDP.
In the Northeast, Assam and Manipur have shown the most improvement, followed by Tripura, Arunachal Pradesh, Sikkim, Mizoram, Meghalaya, and Nagaland compared to 2020-21. The composite score for India in 2023-24 stands at 71. Assam and Manipur improved by 8 points, Tripura by 6 points, Arunachal Pradesh and Sikkim by 5 points, Mizoram by 4 points, and Nagaland by 2 points. Meghalaya’s score is 63, reflecting a 3-point improvement.
Meghalaya’s performance varies across different sectors. It scores 77 on the SDG index for reduced inequalities, with a notably high percentage of professional and technical workers at 169.8%, surpassing the national target. However, in infrastructure, only 20.5% of schools have both electricity and drinking water, and only 18.3% have computers.
Aadhar coverage is below 80% in Meghalaya, Arunachal Pradesh, and Nagaland, with Meghalaya at 77.69%. On the SDG 1 Index for no poverty, and the SDG 2 Index for zero hunger, Meghalaya remains in the performer category, with significant challenges in child undernutrition and maternal anaemia. Additionally, Meghalaya’s murder rate per lakh population is 2.2, slightly above the national average of 2.1.
