Shillong, March 19: In major success against human trafficking, Meghalaya Police has busted an international human trafficking network and apprehended a Bangladeshi woman and two Indian accomplices in multiple operations across the State.
Acting on credible intelligence, police set-up a checkpoint near Byrnihat outpost on Tuesday and intercepted a vehicle (registration no. AS-01-FJ-4645) around 4:10 PM, which was traveling from the Dawki border toward Guwahati in Assam. Upon inspection, they identified the occupants as Jannati Sheikh (26), a Bangladeshi national from Jasor, Khulna, who was found in possession of a forged Indian Aadhaar card, and Raushan Khan, a resident of Rangapani, Barpeta, Assam, who was driving the vehicle.
During interrogation, both individuals admitted to being part of a human trafficking network, illegally transporting people between Bangladesh and India for money without valid documents. Following this revelation, police registered a case under Nongpoh PS Case No. 39(03)2025 under multiple sections of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS) and the Foreigners Act, 1946.
Based on further investigation and interrogation, another suspect, Balajied Khongsun (27), a resident of Wahlyngkhat, Pynursla, East Khasi Hills District, was arrested on Wednesday.
Police said the investigation is ongoing and efforts are underway to trace the forward and backward links of the human trafficking network.
