Shillong, Sept 19: Meghalaya police have registered a case in response to demand notes allegedly issued by the banned Hynniewtrep National Liberation Council (HNLC) to local businesses in Shillong.
“We have registered a case on the matter with the Sadar police station. This was based on the enquiry conducted at SP level. They have confirmed that people have received the demand notes and that is why they have registered the case and investigation is on,” a senior police officer informed on Wednesday.
“Some have reported (the incidents of receiving the demand notes) to the police. Some of them are also willing to submit a complaint,” he said.
Sources informed that a resident from a locality in Shillong had lodged a complaint on September 16, informing that he received information regarding circulation of demand notes/letters, wherein HNLC demanded Rs 15 lakh for the year 2024 from the business community in police bazar area, Shillong.
Further, HNLC warned the business community not to switch-off their mobile phones/change their mobile numbers and also threatened them and their co-workers of ‘military action’.
The senior police officer said that victims are requested to report such illegalities to the police.
He, however, said that people, who are willing to pay the demand amount, are also liable for punishment as per law adding that complying to such demand tantamounts to terror funding.
Meanwhile, SPs of other districts under the eastern range have also been asked to conduct enquiry on the serving of demand notes by the HNLC in their respective jurisdictions.
