Shillong, July 9: Close to 80 percent of the 104 Unarmed Branch (UB) constables, who completed their training in Meghalaya police’s 6th battalion on Tuesday, have qualification above the minimum educational criteria.
The eligibility criteria for the post was class XII pass, but there are now 66 graduates and 14 post graduates, 22 class XII pass and 2 diploma holders who are now Meghalaya police constables. In fact, the eligibility criterion for UB sub-inspectors in Meghalaya police is a graduate.
Reviewing the passing out parade of these constables, Director General of Police, Idashisha Nongrang said, “We have so many graduates and post graduates…we did not have graduates and post graduates opting to become constables of the Meghalaya police.”
However, now with the passage of time a welcome change has happened, Nongrang said about these graduates and post graduates joining as constables.
Nongrang with a word of caution added: “Whatever your background, whatever your qualification, you are now part of the police force, you are expected to be disciplined.”
Encouraging the new recruits, she said some have won prizes and laurels and many others haven’t during their training, but there would be ample opportunity to win laurels and prizes during their tenure as Meghalaya police personnel.
The DGP also congratulated all the trainers who have worked hard to ensure that the new recruits are imparted the best of skills and know how about Meghalaya police.
She said it’s now up to the recruits to make the best use of the training in the real world. Nongrang said sometimes the real life situations might not exactly match the training manuals, in such cases, she advised the recruits to make the right choice based on their principles.
Commandant of 6th battalion, Rituraj Ravi said, the battalion was raised January 28, 2011 and shifted to its permanent campus at Umran in 2018. “Though we are relatively a new and recent unit, the contributions of our training centre overall speaks for itself,” he said.
Meanwhile, the DGP also distributed trophies to the winners. Batsrang A Sangma was awarded the best trainee in physical training. Toribateibok Ksiar best disciplined trainee, Mike Donbor Marngar best trainee indoor subjects.
Monkiru Dhar best trainee in outdoor subjects, Iohlang Lathong best trainee in firing and Saurav Bhusha best cadet trainee.
