Meghalaya police warns citizens against courier fraud

Must read

Shillong, Feb 5: Meghalaya police have cautioned people against the recent courier scam, where fraudsters are impersonating as representatives of courier services like FedEx and reaching out to individuals, falsely claiming that the parcels addressed to them contain illegal substances.

Superintendent of Police (City), Vivek Syiem, on Monday said these scammers also use names of law enforcement agencies like Customs, CBI, NCB, and say that the person’s credentials are being used for money laundering.

They pressurise their targets to transfer money to a certain account, claiming it’s for RBI clearance and even threaten arrest.

The fraudsters also direct victims to register online complaints through applications like AnyDesk, which may be used in turn to exploit unsuspecting targets.

The SP has advised citizens not to download Apps from unsolicited callers and to verify if call is received for an unordered item. He also urged people that any such incident should be reported to their respective police station for further police action.

Such incident can also be reported to Cybercrime helpline number 1930 and also to Police Control Room, Shillong at 0364-2215427 and 6009196479.
