Shillong, Dec 5: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Monday informed that the laying of optical fibre cables across the state will commence from March next year.
Speaking to reporters, Sangma said he chaired a very important review meeting with the IT department officials on the matter.
“We have in principle decided to go ahead with the last mile connectivity in the state in terms of laying of optical fibres. We had a detailed discussion with the telecom wing of the Power grid where we are moving forward now to lay the lines all the way through all the blocks. A road map has been laid and the project will start in a phase wise manner,” he said.
“We expect the work to commence sometime in the month of March next year and we expect that within 12-15 months time that means by 2025 sometime around June-July, we do expect that all the blocks in the state and all the sub divisions and obviously all the districts – all of them will be connected by optical fibres,” Sangma said.
“And not only that wherever from that point if any of the institutions, organizations, hospitals require the connectivity we will then be able to further give the connectivity to all the different locations,” he said.
The chief minister said that the project is very important keeping in mind the large scale e-Governance projects that the government is doing and to improve the overall e-Governance from a public centric point of view.
Sangma said the project is a mixed project because the idea is to connect everything. The project is being proposed under NESID and some parts will be funded by the state government.
