Meghalaya reports a peaceful border situation, with eyes on continued stability

Must read

Shillong, Jan 7: Meghalaya’s border areas have remained calm in recent months, with no adverse reports or incidents, according to Chief Secretary D.P. Wahlang.

Addressing the media on Tuesday, Wahlang expressed confidence that this trend of stability would continue, reassuring residents and officials alike about the ongoing security situation.

“We have not received any adverse reports at all from the border, and we are hopeful this trend will continue,” Wahlang stated. His comments come at a time when security forces, including the Border Security Force (BSF) and local Meghalaya Police, have been maintaining heightened vigilance along the state’s border with Bangladesh.

When asked about alleged sightings of Bangladeshi drones near the border, the Chief Secretary confirmed one instance but downplayed its significance. “I don’t have any specific information about this, except that a drone was detected. However, the technical evaluation of the drone—what it was doing, its strengths, the data it was trying to capture or analyze—is not available to us,” Wahlang explained.

He further clarified that no inputs regarding the incident had been shared by central government agencies or intelligence authorities. “They may be analyzing the information, and they will share it when there is clarity. Regarding this drone, it is no longer visible. It was a one-off event, actually,” he added.

Responding to concerns about illegal immigration, Wahlang firmly dismissed any such issues. “No, we don’t have any reports of illegal immigration at all from Bangladesh,” he said.

“We are closely monitoring developments along the border,” Wahlang added, noting that any intelligence about activities across the border that could potentially affect the state is immediately shared with the BSF. This proactive approach is part of ongoing efforts to ensure that the current peaceful conditions persist.

With the border region largely peaceful for the past two to three months, Wahlang expressed optimism that security forces would continue to prevent any disruptions. The Chief Secretary emphasized the government’s commitment to maintaining a strong security presence and promoting stability in the border areas, signalling that Meghalaya is on track to further safeguard its interests in this sensitive region.
