Shillong, Feb 22: Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma on Wednesday said the government is spending over Rs 12 lakh per month for the 175 political appointments made till date.
“These are not very large financial implication…,” Sangma told reporters.
He said that after rationalizing the benefits given to the different political appointees, the government now hardly pays a bit more than Rs 12 lakh per month adding by doing so, the government was also able to accommodate another 50 people.
The political appointees are from the different political parties supporting the NPP-led MDA government and they are Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), United Democratic Party (UDP) Hill State People’s Democratic Party (HSPDP).
Sangma said there is nothing wrong with political appointments as it is there in every government and it happens in every system.
Stating that it is a way to involve the grassroot political leaders, the CM however said, “What is important is for everybody to question the effectiveness of these appointments and the effectiveness of these boards. Appointment, yes we have to do and we are doing, we want to involve all the grassroots people, we want to involve all political leaders in the system. But as I said, I have been very particular that they should function also.”
Sangma informed that two weeks back, he held a meeting with the Employment Generation Council and asked them to submit two-three proposals to find out ways and means we can generate employment.
“I also had meetings with the other boards that are there like MIDC, MTDC and others, like that. I am very active also in ensuring that they not only should be appointed but they should also be productive,” he added.
