Must read

Shillong, March 17: Meghalaya is making deeper forays into the Dubai market to expand its product reach and increase trade opportunities.

The Meghalaya State Agricultural Marketing Board (MSAMB), under the Department of Agriculture and Farmers Welfare, Government of Meghalaya, undertook a market exposure visit to Dubai from March 16 to 18, 2025. This initiative aligns with the State Government’s Vision 2028, which aims to transform Meghalaya into a USD 10 billion economy by leveraging its natural resources and expanding international trade.

The visit underscores Meghalaya’s commitment to promoting its organic and natural agricultural products on the global stage. With the UAE recognized as a key export market due to its demand for high-quality produce and status as a global trade hub, this initiative seeks to empower Meghalaya’s farmers by enhancing their access to international markets. It also aims to strengthen trade ties, enhance the visibility of Meghalaya’s premium agricultural products in UAE retail markets, and attract investment in the state’s agribusiness sector. Additionally, the visit provides farmer representatives with valuable insights into global market trends, contributing to improved income opportunities and long-term growth.

The state showcased its products at Our Wellness Village Café, Sharjah, where it introduced its organic products to UAE consumers and businesses and interacted with buyers and retailers to explore trade opportunities. A promotional event at Lulu Hypermarket, Silicon Oasis, Dubai, will be held on March 18, 2025, which will have retail displays showcasing Meghalaya’s GI-tagged and organic produce, along with meetings with trade partners to discuss expanding export volumes and product categories.

With over 80% of its population dependent on farming, Meghalaya has embraced sustainable and organic cultivation along with farmer collectivization to align with high-value global supply chains. Initiatives like the Mission Organic Value Chain Development for the North Eastern Region (MOVCD-NER) and MSAMB have played a crucial role in aggregating and branding Meghalaya’s premium products, including GI-tagged Khasi Mandarin, Lakadong Turmeric, organic ginger, and pineapple.

Meghalaya signed an MoU with Lulu Group International in November 2023, facilitated by APEDA. This partnership has already enabled the export of Khasi mandarins, pineapples, and ginger to Dubai, marking a significant milestone for the state.
