Shillong, Jan 27: Deputy Chief Minister in-charge of Urban Affairs, Sniawbhalang Dhar, has reiterated the government’s commitment to addressing the contentious issue of hawker relocation in Shillong, assuring that the process will adhere to the law while striving for inclusivity.
Speaking on the matter, Dhar emphasized, “Everything will be done by the law. We will try to take everyone on board. If complications arise, we’ll solve them together.”
The relocation plan, which aims to streamline urban spaces and enhance public convenience, has triggered resistance from hawkers, with protests erupting across the city.
On Friday, members of the Meghalaya & Greater Shillong Progressive Hawkers and Street Vendors Association (MGSPHSVA) staged a demonstration outside the Shillong Municipal Board (SMB) office, opposing plans to move them from Khyndai Lad to newly designated vending zones. The protesters expressed dissatisfaction with the government’s lack of dialogue and unresolved grievances.
Association representative Shane Thabah criticized the delays by the Town Vending Committee, stating, “We demand immediate action and clarity on the relocation process. The government must address our concerns before moving forward.”
Addressing the Hawkers’ Association’s demand for a vending committee, Dhar reiterated the government’s transparent and lawful approach. “The government is acting as per the law and building confidence among stakeholders. There may be issues in a few places, but we are making adjustments,” he said.
On the February 7 relocation notification, Dhar clarified, “It is not confirmed yet. We will assess the situation before taking any final decision.” He also assured that dialogue remains a priority. “Stakeholders are always welcome to discuss their concerns. If there’s resistance, we will engage with them properly,” Dhar said.
The government’s relocation plan envisions designated vending zones equipped with modern amenities near the MUDA Complex. These zones aim to provide better facilities for vendors while improving urban organization for the public. To facilitate the transition, the SMB has been issuing vending certificates since January 15.
While the government insists the move will benefit both vendors and the public, the hawkers remain skeptical, citing unresolved issues and fear of losing their livelihoods.
