Shillong, April 22: Power Minister AT Mondal on Tuesday clarified that the replacement of faulty transformers and rusted electric poles is part of a continuous process, not a one-time activity.
Responding to questions about the status of transformer replacement, Mondal said, “This is a continuous process. It’s not like once a transformer is replaced, no issues will occur again. The same transformer may fail due to overloading, lightning, or other technical problems. Today we may replace one transformer in one area, but tomorrow a new issue may arise elsewhere. So, this work will keep going on.”

When asked whether this work is part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS), Mondal replied, “It is not directly like that. But wherever a transformer needs to be upgraded or changed, it will be included.”
The Minister also addressed the issue of deteriorating electric infrastructure, noting that around 1 lakh rusted electric poles are slated for replacement.
“We will be changing the conductors as well,” he said. “In areas where tree branches fall on wires or where there are frequent technical faults, and even in places where unauthorized tapping happens, we are switching to aerial bundled conductors — that means covered wires. We will also try to replace electric poles that are in very bad condition.”

Mondal emphasized again that this overhaul is ongoing. “By the time we replace everything, the equipment that is currently in good condition may start rusting in three to four years. So, this process will continue.”
Asked whether the initial phase of work is focused solely on Shillong, Mondal clarified, “The work is for the entire state.”
On safety concerns, especially in forested areas where high-tension lines pass through, the Minister responded to recent incidents like the electrocution of an elephant in Ri-Bhoi district. “When it comes to public safety, it is always a priority. High-tension lines like 132 KV are installed on towers with sufficient height, so there is little chance of people coming in contact with them. But in cases where snapping occurs due to wind or lightning, we take the necessary steps to address it,” he said.
Regarding a recent viral video showing children hanging onto electric poles in West Khasi Hills, Mondal said he was not aware of the incident but promised to look into it. “I will find out about it,” he assured.
