Meghalaya truckers launch indefinite strike over unchanged coke transport rates in Jaintia Hills

Must read

Shillong, May 5: The Meghalaya Commercial Truck Owners and Drivers Association (MCTODA) on Monday called for an indefinite strike as a mark of protest against the failure of the Coke Manufacturing Association (CMA) to comply with the demand for enhancing the rate of transportation of coke in Jaintia Hills region.

Announcing this decision, general secretary of the association Shanborang Suchiang said, “We have decided to go ahead with our indefinite strike after the CMA fails to pay heed to our demand, which is to increase the transportation rate to Rs 2500 per ton from Rs 1400 per ton.”

He said the association has taken the decision after the deadline given to the CMA ended today.

“In fact, we had written letters not only to the CMA but to all the coke manufacturing units as well on several occasions, the latest being on April 14-15 but there was no response on their part. Accordingly, we decided to send a reminder on May 1 giving an ultmatum for them to reply on May 5,” Suchiang added.

He also urged all truck owners and drivers to cooperate and support the decision of the MCTODA.
