Shillong, July 4: The State of Meghalaya was awarded the ‘Best Performer’ by the Union Minister of Commerce and Industry, Piyush Goyal for developing a strong start-up ecosystem in the State. The award was accepted by Meghalaya Government officials on Monday at the award ceremony in New Delhi.
Along with Meghalaya, two other states – Gujarat and Karnataka were also awarded the ‘Best Performers’ in the 3rd Edition of the ranking of States that support Start-Up ecosystem.

A total of 24 states and 7 UTs participated in the exercise with 7 reform areas and 26 action points. The states were categorized into five groups – Best Performers, Top Performers, Leaders, Aspiring Leaders and Emerging Startup Ecosystem.
Speaking to reporters here on Monday, Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma said it is a happy moment as the Meghalaya government has really focus on entrepreneurship and start-up programs for a very long time.
“…as an entrepreneur myself, I have faced a lot of challenges..the lack of proper support and system, even a small support structure will encourage our entrepreneurs. And in the long run for any economy to move forward unless and until start-ups and entrepreneurships are not encouraged the economy cannot move forward”, he said.
The CM also said that the role of the Government is to be the felicitator and create the policies the ecosystem and entrepreneurship drives the economy forward.
“I gave full credits of this award that the State has received to the entrepreneurs of our State”, added CM.
