Shillong, March 21: Meghalaya government’s Drug Reduction Elimination & Action Mission (DREAM) will be partnering with the United Nations Office on Drugs and Crime (UNODC) for conducting a detailed survey on the number of drug users in the State.
Informing this after convening a meeting with youth organizations of different localities in Shillong, Mission Director of DREAM, Francis Kharshiing, said that there is no proper data on the number of drug users in the state. “However, we are partnering with the UNODC to conduct a detailed survey of drug users in the state,” he said.

“We have requested UNODC to support us and tomorrow we are having a meeting with them and I hope we will be able to start off the survey and may in few months we should get reliable data on how many users are there in the state,” Kharshiing added.
Further, the mission director informed that the stakeholders have come up with constructive suggestions including the need to have vocational training demonstration in the different localities.
“We have agreed and we have requested the shnongs and seng samla specially to have a discussion in their localities and then come back to us, we will arrange a programme specially for youths in their localities specially for students who have passed out but have no skills,” he said.
He added that vocational teams like the ITIs, Ram Krishna, Don Bosco Technical Schools and others are ready to partner with the government to provide trainings free of cost. “From the government side, we want to encourage children to learn skills,” Kharshiing stated.
