Shillong, April 8: The Meghalaya government announced on Tuesday that EasyLotter, India’s first fully digital lottery launched by the state in 2024, has encountered legal challenges. The government remains hopeful for a resolution soon.
Chief Minister Conrad K. Sangma, who inaugurated the lottery in New Delhi, acknowledged the situation but noted that he had not reviewed its operations in detail.
“As far as I know, this was the first of its kind in the country when it was launched,” Sangma said. “We were very optimistic about it because of the technology being used. The transparency it ensured made us believe this could be the future of lotteries in India.”
However, he admitted that the initiative had faced operational difficulties.
“With so many complexities arising, the lottery has not functioned at the optimal level we had envisioned,” he said.
Explaining the state’s motivation behind the project, he added, “This technological intervention was seen as a fresh way to modernize the system. But, as expected, legal challenges have also emerged.”
Sangma clarified that the legal disputes primarily involve multiple operators across different states, not just Meghalaya.
“There are ongoing court cases, some of which are still being fought,” he said. “We hope for a resolution soon. Our goal was to bring more transparency, build confidence in the system, and, of course, generate more revenue for the state.”
He also highlighted the broader complexities of the lottery sector in India.
“It’s a massive industry, with different states having their own laws and regulations. That’s why this initiative has run into legal hurdles. We’ll have to wait and see, but I hope the matter is resolved soon. ”
