Shillong, March 24: The Living Root Bridge at Meghalaya joins the prestigious list of iconic yoga venues, where sessions have been held at India’s most celebrated landmarks, bringing yoga into the heart of Meghalaya’s sacred landscapes.
Since the United Nations declared June 21 as the International Day of Yoga in 2014, India has redefined the global yoga experience by hosting sessions at its most iconic landmarks. From the Taj Mahal to the Konark Sun Temple, from the Gateway of India to the Red Fort, each location tells a story of history, culture, and well-being.
Adding to this legacy, the Living Root Bridge—an awe-inspiring natural marvel woven from the aerial roots of rubber fig trees—served as the venue for a remarkable yoga session organized by the North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH). Set against a backdrop of misty hills, cascading waterfalls, and the whispering rainforest, the event marked the countdown to International Day of Yoga (IDY) 2025.

North Eastern Institute of Ayurveda and Homoeopathy (NEIAH) is an Autonomous Institute, under the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India located at Mawdiangdiang, Shillong, Meghalaya. The Institute was established by the Ministry of AYUSH, Govt. of India to impart Graduate, Post-graduate, Doctoral and Research programs in Ayurveda and Homoeopathy and also provide quality medical facilities and act as a referral hospital. At present, the Institute is running one College of Ayurveda & one College of Homoeopathy offering undergraduate courses in BAMS (Bachelor of Ayurvedic Medicine Surgery) and BHMS (Bachelor of Homoeopathic Medicine & Surgery)
The participants noted that this wasn’t just another yoga event; it was a testament to resilience and harmony—both of nature and the human spirit. Much like the bridge itself, which has withstood the test of time through generations of Khasi craftsmanship, yoga embodies patience, strength, and balance. The event symbolised how ancient wisdom can seamlessly blend with modern wellness to inspire sustainable, mindful living.

The session brought together yoga practitioners and wellness enthusiasts, who found themselves immersed in an experience where breath, movement, and nature merged into one. As they held their asanas on the living, breathing bridge, the message was clear—yoga is not just an exercise but a way of life, deeply rooted in balance and coexistence with nature.
With every pose and every breath taken on this ancient bridge, the world was reminded that yoga belongs everywhere—not just within studios, but under open skies, among whispering trees, and in the embrace of nature’s timeless wonders.
