Meghalaya’s organic turmeric project sparks new hope for farmers

Must read

Shillong, Dec 1: In a significant push for rural livelihoods, the HID Foundation Shillong has embarked on a transformative initiative to position Meghalaya as a leader in organic turmeric production.

Under its Initiative for Sustainable Livelihood Promotion Programme (ISLPP), the Foundation launched the Organic Turmeric Project in May 2023 at Marnagr-Umden Cluster, Umling C&RD Block, Ri-Bhoi District, aiming to revolutionize farming practices and uplift the rural economy.

Funded by the North Eastern Council (NEC) under the Ministry of Development of North Eastern Region (MDoNER) and implemented by the Directorate of Horticulture, Government of Meghalaya, the project has already made impressive strides. With technical guidance from the District Horticulture Officer of Ri-Bhoi, the initiative directly benefits 100 farmers and indirectly impacts over 1,000 farming families.

Farmers have received full financial support, including planting materials, bio-fertilizers, manure, and daily wage coverage, allowing them to focus entirely on sustainable turmeric cultivation. The first phase is already complete, while the second phase is 75% underway, marking a strong trajectory of progress.

The project also seeks to solve a long-standing issue—the lack of high-quality turmeric seed rhizomes—while empowering communities still recovering from the economic fallout of the COVID-19 pandemic. By introducing scientific organic farming methods, it aims to secure long-term income stability for local farmers.

“This initiative is more than just farming; it’s about hope and resilience,” a statement from HID Foundation said thanking NEC and the Government of India for their support in helping them rebuild rural livelihoods and strengthen the farming community.

The initiative has positioned Meghalaya to becoming a leader in organic turmeric production, offering a ray of hope for thousands of farmers and setting a national example for sustainable agriculture.
