Shillong, Oct 20: Meghalaya were convincingly outplayed by the more established teams of Maharashtra and Karnataka in their respective Vinoo Mankad Trophy and Senior Women’s T20 Trophy matches on Friday.

While the U-19 men’s team lost by a whopping 391 runs against Maharashtra in Vijayawada, the women’s side went down by 10 wickets to Karnataka in Vadodara.

In their last Vinoo Mankad match of the season, in which they have faced some of the best teams in the country, Meghalaya had to bowl first after losing the toss and conceded 466/6 in a full 50 overs against Maharashtra, whose Digvijay Patil smashed an incredible 239 from 139 deliveries before being caught by Charm Marbaniang off the bowling of Angkit Tamang (3/85). Da-u-la-biang Shangpliang claimed 2/88 while the other wicket to fall was thanks to a run out effected by Shavian Blah.

With the bat, Meghalaya could only manage 75/10 in 26.4 overs. Lensbirth Marak made 12 and Shubham Rasaily 17 at the top of the order while Angkit contributed 16 coming in at No. 8. Although the state team lost every one of their five matches, the tournament will have been a tough but valuable learning experience for the young men.

Meanwhile, the Meghalaya senior women’s team were made to bat first after losing the toss against Karnataka and were skittled for a mere 41 in 12.2 overs of the 20 available, with no batter getting more than 7 runs. Karnataka then required just 7.3 overs to reach the target and did so without loss.

Meghalaya will next take on Tamil Nadu on Sunday. And, in the Syed Mushtaq Ali Trophy, Meghalaya’s senior men’s T20 team will face Chhattisgarh in Jaipur on Saturday.
