Tura, Feb 6: In a historic milestone for railway logistics in Northeast, Mendipathar Railway Station in Meghalaya, under the Rangiya Division of Northeast Frontier Railway (NFR), completed its first-ever freight rake unloading on February 4.
“A 21-wagon freight rake carrying food grains for the Food Corporation of India (FCI) arrived at Mendipathar station at 9:20 AM and was placed for unloading at 9:40 AM, marking the first time a goods train has been unloaded in Meghalaya,” an NFR spokesperson said here on Thursday.
Since its operational launch on August 29, 2014, Mendipathar remains Meghalaya’s only railway station. Equipped with four railway lines and a spacious goods circulating area, the station is now poised to play a crucial role in strengthening the state’s economy and ensuring the smooth movement of essential commodities.
This milestone highlights Mendipathar’s growing potential as a key freight hub, showcasing the availability of essential logistics infrastructure such as trucks, labour, and expert handling services to facilitate efficient goods transportation.
The successful unloading at Mendipathar is part of NFR’s broader mission to enhance logistics efficiency across the Northeast through modern technology, faster freight movement, and optimized supply chain management.
“The entire team at NFR is dedicated to improving logistics efficiency in the region. Mendipathar Railway Station is set to emerge as a vital hub for freight movement, significantly contributing to Meghalaya’s development and strengthening the railway network in the Northeast,” said an NFR spokesperson.
