Tura, May 14: The District Football Association (DFA) along with the members of the Meghalaya Football Association (MFA) on Tuesday conducted a football screening for U-14 (boys) and U-16 (boys) at the GBHSS Chandmari Football Turf in Tura.
The screening was conducted so the players can represent West Garo Hills in the upcoming U-14 and U-16 Meghalaya Youth League tournament.
The screening sees a positive response as about 60 future footballers from Tura and nearby areas came to participate. However, the final screening will be held soon, so only 18 players will be selected for both the U-14 and U-16 team.
MFA members, including Sunesh M Syiem, General Secretary, MFA; Cliff R Nongrum, Vice President, MFA; and Freddy Kharpran, Executive Member, MFA, traveled from Shillong to conduct the football screening with the aim of identifying promising young talents from Tura.
The Meghalaya Youth League, a U-14 and U-16 football tournament, is an inter-district tournament where all the affiliated district associations to the MFA will be participating from the Garo Hills, Jantia Hills, East Khasi Hills, and West Khasi Hills districts.
The screening process for the Garo Hills region was divided into four zones: Tura, Williamnagar, Baghmara, and Resubelpara. The MFA will soon conduct the screening process in the other districts later this month.
The affiliated district associations will be playing in a home and away match basis among the zones divided, and the top two teams from the four regions will culminate in Shillong where the quarterfinals, semifinals, and final will be held.
Speaking to Hub News, Sunesh M Syiem said, ‘the component of this youth league is that it will be kind of an inter-district tournament, where all the boys will be getting a chance to play. We are having this tournament, in fact, to build up the state team of Meghalaya where we are participating in the Juniors and Sub Juniors Nationals,’ he added.
