Shillong, May 25: The Meghalaya Human Rights Commission (MHRC) has issued notice directing the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report into the recent eviction drive against alleged illegal settlers at Lum Survey.
In a press statement on Saturday, MHRC Secretary said the commission has taken a suo motu cognizance pertaining to residents crying for help after demolition at Lum Survey.
The Commission has issued a notice to the Chief Secretary to submit a detailed report on or before May 30, he said.
On May 23, A case has been registered against top leaders of the Hynniewtrep Youth Council (HYC) just hours after they carried out an eviction drive against alleged of illegal settlers at Lum Survey.
“The case was registered at the Sadar police station against HYC president Roy Kupar Synrem, vice president Donbok Kharlyngdoh, assistant general secretary Isaac Basaiawmoit and multiple unknown others in connection with the unlawful actions carried out by them in Lum Survey in the morning of 23/05/24,” East Khasi Hills Superintendent of Police Rituraj Ravi had said.
He had informed the investigation is under progress in the matter.
