Tura, Sept 5: A mini mela with 23 stalls showcasing a wide range of products from Urban Self-Help Groups (SHGs) began at the iconic Gandrak Dare waterfall in Tura on Thursday.
The two-day mela is part of the Deen Dayal Antyodaya Yojana – National Urban Livelihood Mission (DAY-MULM), organized in collaboration with the Tura Municipal Board and the Urban Affairs Department of Meghalaya.
The aim of the mela is to promote local entrepreneurship and support urban livelihoods in the region, offering a platform for small businesses to showcase their products and grow their customer base.
Visitors to the mela have the opportunity to explore and purchase various items such as local foods, accessories, jewellery, clothes, and handcrafted goods. A highlight of the mela is the sizeable presence of women entrepreneurs running many of the stalls.
The Mini Mela, which runs from 1 PM to 5 PM, will conclude on Friday. In addition to the stalls, attendees were also entertained by the performances of artists from the Meghalaya Grassroot Music Project (MGMP).
Gandrak Dare Waterfall received a major upgrade earlier this year with the inauguration of a recreational park adjacent to it, which makes the experience of visiting the waterfall a lot more rewarding and purpose friendly.
It now has various attractions such as an ornamental Bo.rang (tree house), seating area, mini jacuzzi, changing room, a small eatery shack, a large photo booth with the Gandrak waterfall as its backdrop, and a semi-dome structure for visitors, besides flower beds adorning the park, and a dedicated space for local self-help groups to promote their products.
