Minister Marcuise clarifies on Experts Committee constitution for Job Reservation Policy, says this is not the first time

Tura, May 6: State working president of the NPP and senior minister in charge of PHE Marcuise N Marak has spoken out to clarify on the state job reservation policy issue following a recent allegation levelled against the government by former chief minister and Trinamool leader Mukul Sangma.

The attack by Mukul Sangma appears to be in regards to the recent constitution of an Experts Committee to study the job reservation policy in the state.

Mukul Sangma had attacked the Conrad K Sangma government in a recent social media post accusing them of attempting to tamper with the highly sensitive issue of job reservation policy and deemed it detrimental for the people of the state.

Countering the TMC leader’s allegation, Minister Marcuise Marak clarified that the job of the Experts Committee is solely to study the working of the state job reservation policy in detail and submit their findings to the government.

“The reason for constituting the committee with experts from outside the state and not having any member from the state- be it Garo, Khasi or Jaintia, is to ensure it is totally neutral when they conduct the study. There will be no biasness,” said the minister.

The five member Experts Committee headed by retired judge Justice M C Garg as Chairman includes as members Dr Satish Chandra, Prof. D V Kumar, Prof. Chandrashekar, and Prof. Subhodeep Mukherjee.

“If we were to put members from our own communities there is a possibility emotions may sway decisions. That is why the state government decided to appoint neutral people. Chief Minister Conrad K Sangma had a serious look into the issue to ensure the sentiments of no individual, group or community are hurt. There should be no room for confusion,” added Marcuise Marak.

The Experts Committee has been tasked with visiting different parts of the state, meeting with the public and stakeholders, listen to their grievances, take their suggestions, hold public hearings and submit its report to the government to take a final call.

The minister also pointed out that this is not the first time that a review of the state job reservation policy is being carried out.

“In 1987 when Captain Williamson A Sangma was the chief minister the reservation policy was reviewed. The review report was brought before the state cabinet and after a thorough study it was passed with the decision to maintain status quo on the policy,” revealed Marcuise Marak.

“Based on the submission of the final report, the state cabinet will decide whether to review or maintain status quo,” added the minister.

He also informed that for the people of Garo Hills there will be adequate opportunity to put across their view points and suggestions.

“The Experts Committee will also come fo Garo Hills and each and every stakeholder will get the chance to submit their views to the committee,” said Marak as he urged the public not to get carried away by claims and allegations on social media posts that are absent of any facts on the issue.
