Shillong, Nov 17: IIM Shillong came alive with hues of creativity and collaboration as it hosted the second edition of its Artist Residency Programme from November 6 to 16. This unique initiative, organized by Zeitgeist, the institute’s literary and activities club, aimed to integrate creativity into the realm of management education—a vision realized through a symphony of art, dialogue, and innovation.
The program was inaugurated with grandeur by Shishir Kumar Bajoria, Chairman of the Board of Governors, amidst the institute’s vibrant fraternity. Bringing together 16 accomplished artists from premier institutions across the country, the residency transformed the campus into a crucible of artistic expression and managerial insight. The theme, Misty Musings: The Shifting Landscape, perfectly encapsulated the ethos of the event, exploring the interplay of clarity and obscurity. The mist, symbolic of hidden realities and untapped potential, became a metaphor for unearthing meaning in ambiguity—much like navigating the complexities of the business world.
For ten days, artists and students engaged in a journey that was as introspective as it was collaborative. The program blended workshops, keynote sessions, and discussions, creating an open exchange of ideas between art and management. One of the most anticipated moments was the keynote session by Mr. Jeet Banerjee, the visionary founder of Gameplan Sports Private Ltd., who shared his entrepreneurial journey and the creative strategies that fueled his success. Dr. Paula Sengupta, a Board of Governors member, presented a compelling discussion on her art, exploring themes of domesticity, patriarchy, and colonial legacies, which struck a profound chord with attendees.
The residency culminated in the inauguration of the Open Studio, showcasing over 100 paintings created during the program. Held on November 16 the event was graced by luminaries including Atul Chandrakant Kulkarni, Prof. Abhishek Vashisht, Prof. Rohit Dwivedi, and the curator, Samindranath Majumdar.
Visitors were captivated by the vibrant pieces that captured the residency’s theme. From abstract interpretations of the mist’s mystery to vivid depictions of Shillong’s changing landscapes, the artworks resonated with the idea of seeing beyond the obvious—a skill equally vital in the corporate world.
