Must read

Guwahati, July 4: In a significant development, the Mizoram Church Leaders Committee in a letter to the Law Commission of India has urged the government to rescind processing of the UCC.

The Mizoram Church Leader’s Committee does not accept the Uniform Civil Code as it is and strongly condemns it. “And so, we strongly appeal to you that the efforts made to impose the UCC should be suspended, and the proposal to introduce this code be rescinded.”

In response to the Public Notice issued on June 14, 2023, the Mizoram Church Leader’s Committee (M.K.H.C.) as stakeholder of the Uniform Civil Code stated that Mizoram by virtue of Memorandum of Settlement (Peace accord) is placed on the status that “Notwithstanding anything contained in the constitution, no act of Parliament in respect of: (a) Religion or social practises of the Mizo.(b) Mizo Customary Law or Procedure.(c) Administration of Civil and Criminal Justice involving decisions according to Mizo customary Law.(d) Ownership and transfer of Land shall apply to the State of Mizoram unless the Legislative Assembly of Mizoram by a resolution so decides.”

“The MKHC by careful scanning of the content of UCC feels that UCC is detrimental to the unity in diversity of Indian culture, religions and customs
which our fore runners have dearly held and cherished. UCC is undeniably undermining the rights and privileges of minority enshrined in Constitution Article 371(G). UCC could be an instrument of oppression and assimilation of the minority communities and religious bodies in our land.”

On the other hand, influential apex body of Naga tribes Naga Hoho has strongly opposed the “imposition of Uniform Civil Code (UCC)”.

The Naga Hoho said it strongly opposed the “imposition of a Uniform Civil Code (UCC) on the diverse communities of India, particularly on the Nagas”. It added,“We firmly believe that any attempt to enforce a one-size-fits-all approach would undermine the constitutional provisions, unique history, and indigenous culture and identity of the Nagas, as well as the principles of unity in diversity in the country”.
