Aizawl, Nov 4: With barely three days before polling is held for election to the 40-member Mizoram legislative assembly, the election campaign has reached its peak with the major political parties hurling accusations and counter accusations at each other.
The political parties are going house to house seeking votes for their candidates.
The assembly polls in Mizoram have become interesting after the Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM), the second largest party in Mizoram legislative assembly, criticised ruling Mizo National Front (MNF) for not doing anything in their last five years.
ZPM also urged the MNF party to leave the BJP-led NDA if the latter is against the BJP.
TBC Lalvenchhunga said that ZPM will not forge a post-poll alliance with the saffron party in any circumstances. He said that the party hopes to form the next government on its own.
He also accused the MNF and the Congress of spreading false propaganda against ZPM.
A stiff contest is expected between MNF and ZPM in the November 7 polls. Both are regional forces but their agendas are different.
In all, 174 candidates, including 16 women, are in the fray for the polls.
Ruling MNF, main opposition party Zoram People’s Movement (ZPM) and Congress have fielded candidates in all the 40 seats.
BJP, which contested 39 seats and won only one seat in the last assembly polls in 2018, has this time fielded candidates in 23 seats and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) in its electoral debut in Mizoram has nominated four candidates in Aizawl district.
In Mizoram, over 80 per cent voters cast their votes in most of the elections, with 80.82 per cent of the total of 6,90,860 voters having exercised their franchise in the 2013 Assembly polls while 80.03 per cent of the 7,74,757 voters cast their votes in the 2018 elections.
