Mizoram: Drugs worth Rs 7.5 cr seized in Mizoram, two peddlers arrested

Aizawl, Aug 18: In a crackdown against contraband drugs, the Mizoram police on Thursday seized 2.330 kg highly addictive Methamphetamine tablets, with a market value of Rs 7.5 crore. Police have also arrested two drug peddlers in connection with the drugs haul.

The drug peddlers have been identified as Sourabh Nath (34) and Mohammad Nur Ahmed (39). Nath and Ahmed are residents of northern Tripura, adjoining Mizoram and Bangladesh.

“Acting on a top off, the Aizawl District Special Branch team launched an operation and arrested the drug peddlers and seized Methamphetamine tablets from their possession,” said a police official.

A case has been registered at Aizawl Police Station under the Narcotics Drugs and Psychotropic Substances (NDPS) Act for further investigation on forward/backward linkages.

“The arrested drug peddle said that the Methamphetamine tablets, also commonly known as ‘Yaba’ or ‘Party’ tablets, were brought from Myanmar and were intended to be smuggled into Bangladesh,” said the official.

Besides various illicit drugs, foreign cigarettes, gold, arms and ammunition, exotic animals, and areca nuts are often smuggled from Myanmar into the northeastern states, especially Mizoram and Manipur.

“We are taking all possible steps to curb the drug smuggling. Recently, our team have conducted many operations against the illicit drugs and, so far, seized huge quantity of drugs. We have so far arrested many drug peddlers,” added a police official.
