Aizawl, Dec 25: The festivity of Christmas in Mizoram has its own special essence. The state, where Christmas traditions flourish among its majority Christian inhabitants, morphs during the lead-up to the holiday — homes, roads and churches draped in decorations and illuminations. Families exchange gifts, cook together, and go to Church events and so on.
On Wednesday, Christmas was celebrated in the city of Aizawl in an atmosphere of peace and sincere devotion, along with the rest of the millions across the world who marked the day with festivities.
The day was filled with solemn Church services by different Christian denominations as they all sang hymns and delivered messages praising the birth of Christ. Pastors gave sermons on the meaning of Christmas, which was love, forgiveness, and hope.
Numerous congregations also held special post service gatherings, serving tea and snacks to promote a sense of community and togetherness. Even though few churches celebrated Christmas feasts on Christmas day itself, most are set to hold festive meals on December 26, a practice in Mizoram for decades.
Overall, the streets of Aizawl were peaceful on Christmas eve and throughout the day on Christmas, local police said. There were no reports of brawls or accidents.
In a heartwarming gesture, Mizoram Home Minister K. Sapdanga visited several police stations across the city to convey Christmas greetings to the officers on duty. At the main Aizawl Police Station, a symbolic cake-cutting ceremony was held after midnight.
