Mizoram: Khawzawl District Hit Hard by Cyclonic Storm – Hundreds Left Homeless

Aizawl, April 28: A powerful cyclonic storm that struck the Khawzawl district of Mizoram in the early hours of April 27 has left widespread devastation in its wake, damaging hundreds of homes across two villages.

According to initial reports, as many as 24 houses were completely destroyed in Tualpui village, while 27 houses suffered significant damage in the village of Vankala when the cyclone brought torrential rains and fierce winds around 2 AM on Saturday.

Reacting swiftly to the crisis, Khawzawl District Deputy Commissioner K. Lalrohlua has set up immediate relief efforts to aid the displaced families. On Saturday, relief materials, including tarpaulin sheets, were distributed to affected residents of Tualpui village by SDC Elijah LH Sanga. Similar relief operations were carried out in Vankala on Sunday, with tarpaulins provided to those who lost their homes.

The district administration is working closely with the Village Level Disaster Management Committees to ensure proper rehabilitation of the hundreds rendered homeless by the cyclone’s fury.

DC Lalrohlua stated that financial assistancefrom the State Disaster Response Fund (SDRF) will be provided to the affected families after proper verification will be provided to the affected families. He added that the relief funds would be directly deposited into the bank accounts of the village disaster management committees for disbursement.

While expressing gratitude for the government’s timely intervention, residents of Tualpui and Vankala appealed for longer-term rehabilitation support to rebuild their damaged homes and restore their livelihoods destroyed by the cyclonic storm.
