Aizawl, June 15: The Young Mizo Association (YMA) on Wednesday said that Myanmar nationals are taking shelter in Mizoram’s Kolasib district were seen to possess Indian documents like Aadhaar card, PAN card and bank passbook.
After the coup in Myanmar, many Myanmar’s nationals fled to Mizoram for shelter. Since then many nationals of Myanmar were living in relief camps in Mizoram.
In recent statement, the Awithangpa group of YMA said that it had assessed 110 Myanmar nationals who are currently taking shelter at Khamrang village in the Kolasib district.
According to reports, three Myanmar nationals were found to have an Aadhaar card; another was in possession of a Federal Bank (Aizawl) passbook, and yet another had a PAN card.
It alleged that the Myanmar nationals paid Rs 8,000 for one Aadhar card.
Back in April 2023, Benjanim Sum, a Myanmarese singer taking refuge in Mizoram, was seen riding a brand new bike registered in his name. To do so, one requires a valid identity or residential proof.
Mizoram currently hosts about 34,000 Myanmar nationals and over 700 people from Bangladesh.
Refugees from Myanmar poured in after the Tatmadaw or Myanmar military took over the country post a coup on February 1, 2021.
