Mizoram Polls 2023: Who is Zoramthanga? A look at his journey from rebel to CM of the state

Must read

Aizawl, Oct 11: Mizoram is gearing up for the upcoming legislative election scheduled for November 7, and political leaders are keeping a close eye on four key constituencies where the contest is likely to be a tough competition. With a total of 40 constituencies in the northeastern state of Mizorma, these four constituencies will play a pivotal role in determining the political landscape in Mizoram.

Who is Zoramthanga?

Zoramthanga has been serving as the fifth chief minister of Mizoram since 2018.

The 79-year-old had also served as the Chief Minister of the state for two terms, from 1998 to 2008.

He is also the Mizo National Front (MNF) party president.

As Assembly elections are set to take place in November, here is a quick look at the political career of Zoramthanga

1990: After the death of Laldenga due to lung cancer, Zoramthanga became the President of the Mizo National Front.

1993: In the elections this year, MNF lost to the Indian National Congress party, and he became the leader of the opposition in the state assembly after winning from Champai for the third time.

1998: After MNF won the polls, Zoramthanga became the chief minister for the first time.

2003: Again after MNF won the assembly polls this year,  Zoramthanga became the chief minister for the second time.

2008: In the Assembly elections, MNF managed to win only three seats. He lost in both the Champhai North and Champhai South constituencies.

2013: In the assembly elections, MNF and Zoramthanga again failed to make a comeback.

2018: MNF won the majority and came to power in this year’s assembly elections. He was elected from the Aizawl East-I constituency and became the chief minister of Mizoram on 15, December, 2018.

Talking about his early days,  he graduated from DM College in Manipur, after which he joined the Mizo National Front (MNF) movement.

MNF  was formed by Laldenga as a civil society organisation to fight the great famine of 1959. Later, the organisation became known as the Mizo National Front and then was involved in insurgencies in the mid-’60s.
