Aizawl, May 1: The 49th General Assembly of the Mizoram Senior Citizens Association (Mizoram Upa Pawl) was held at Vanapa Hall in the heart of the state capital. District headquarters officials, area, and branch leaders attended the assembly, which discussed various issues related to senior citizens.
The MUP General Headquarters President, Pu Nghaklianmawia, chaired the morning session. He expressed gratitude towards the state government for the increase in the Old Age Pension from Rs 100 to Rs 1000 starting this financial year. The assembly also highlighted the construction of a new MUP building worth Rs 290 lakh and thanked the government for its support.
Dr. Lalhriatzuali Ralte, IAS, Director of Social Welfare, addressed the assembly, emphasizing the government’s efforts to enhance schemes for senior citizens, including providing recreational centers and improved care services. She praised the MUP members for their significant contributions.
In the afternoon session, Vice President Pu Lalbiakmawia Khiangte presented the budget for 2024-25, which was approved by the assembly. The assembly focused on implementing the increased Old Age Pension and discussed strategies to further support and recognize the branches of MUP for their role in advocating for the elderly.
The assembly also urged the government to continue supporting the less fortunate. It proposed that the tenure of Local Councils/Village Councils be reduced from five years to three years to enhance governance.
