Shillong, July 31: The Meghalaya Medical Services Association (MMSA) on Monday commended the Health Department, Government of Meghalaya, for its visionary approach in addressing the acute shortage of doctors in the state.
In a ground-breaking move, the Health Department established the Meghalaya Medical Recruitment Board (MMRB) under the leadership of Principal Secretary, Sampath Kumar, and Commissioner & Secretary, Dr. Joram Beda, MMSA president Dr. (Mrs) Y.A.Phira said in a statement.
This initiative has resulted in the recruitment of 400 new doctors into regular services, in January 2023, within the Health Department, marking a significant milestone in improving healthcare services across various health institutions in Meghalaya, she said.
She said that the establishment of MMRB has streamlined the recruitment process, ensuring transparency and efficiency, and has already made a positive impact on healthcare accessibility and quality, particularly in rural and underserved areas.
The prompt and successful recruitment of doctors has not only boosted the healthcare workforce but has also addressed the long-standing deficiency of doctors in the state.
The president said the association also extends its heartfelt appreciation to the Health Department, Government of Meghalaya, and all officials involved in this transformative initiative.
“We stand ready to collaborate with the government to further strengthen the healthcare ecosystem and contribute to the betterment of healthcare services for every citizen of Meghalaya.”
“As we move forward, the MMSA is inspired by the government’s dedication and vision and remains committed to providing accessible, equitable, and high-quality healthcare services to all residents of Meghalaya,” she added.
