Tura, July 1: With the monsoon season venting its fury across the region, bringing in incessant rains that have triggered landslides and floodings, Tura’s most visited rain fed landmark Gandrak Dare waterfalls is to remain closed from Monday, until further orders.
The Tura Municipal Board (TMB) has announced the close of the tourism site at Gandrak Dare as a temporary measure in view of the heavy rains, that is expected to further intensify in the next few days.
The Board has cited weather warnings from the Indian Meteorological Department (IMD) of heavy monsoon showers behind the decision to stop visitors from coming close to the water falls.
The government had made renovations and tourism friendly utilities in and around the waterfalls that has been drawing scores of visitors, including tourists from outside, as they enjoy the scenic view and take snapshots to take back as memories of their visit.
But heavy rains in the Tura peak area usually turned Gandrak Dare into a raging waterfall that can, at times, turn dangerous triggering landslides.
Several years ago, the entire portion of the road leading to the waterfalls was washed away by monsoon rains and it took the government years to get the link restored.
In apprehension of that, authorities are taking no chances and have advised visitors to stay away until a change in the situation.
