Shillong, Sep 24: The Members of Parliament (MPs) representing the North East region have penned a compelling letter to the Union Minister of Road and Transport, highlighting the pressing need for the repair and widening of National Highway No-6, which serves as a vital link connecting Shillong, Meghalaya, with Silchar, Mizoram, and Tripura.
In their letter to the Union Minister, Nitin Gadkari, the MP of Shillong Parliamentary Seat, Vincent Pala, along with MPs from Assam, Tripura, and Mizoram, express deep concern over the deteriorating state of NH-6. They emphasise that the current condition of the highway poses a severe inconvenience to the local populace and poses a significant safety hazard.
“The deteriorating condition of NH-6 has been a matter of grave concern for the residents and commuters in these areas. Despite its crucial role in connecting these states, the road has seen little repair or maintenance over the past year, resulting in increased travel times, accidents, and disruptions in the transportation of essential goods,” the MPs state in their letter.
The MPs point out that the escalating traffic on NH-6 is primarily attributed to mining activities in Meghalaya and the growing economic interdependence among the states connected by the highway. With the existing two-lane road struggling to handle this surge in traffic, congestion, delays, and adverse impacts on the local economy have become glaring issues. The letter underscores the highway’s unparalleled importance as the sole link between Meghalaya and the Barak Valley.
In their appeal to the Central Government, the MPs from the North East call for immediate action in three key areas:
1. Urgent Repair: They implore the government to prioritise immediate repairs, encompassing the filling of potholes, restoration of damaged sections, and the implementation of proper road markings and signage to ensure commuter safety.
2. Widening to Six Lanes: Given the exponential growth in traffic, the MPs propose the expansion of NH-6 to six lanes, a move they believe is vital to accommodate the increasing volume of vehicles and facilitate smooth traffic flow. This expansion is deemed critical for fostering economic growth and enhanced connectivity in the region.
3. Regular Maintenance: Once the repair and widening efforts are completed, the MPs request a commitment from the government for regular and periodic maintenance to ensure the longevity and safety of this indispensable highway.
