Shillong, Feb 27: Speaker of the Lok Sabha Om Birla on Friday said the representatives of the Northeast are always given priorities and opportunities in the parliament.

There are 25 Member of Parliament in Lok Sabha from the Northeast.

Replying to a query, Birla said, “My attempt is the representatives from the Northeast should get more opportunity to speak so that the aspiration of the people can be brought up in the parliament that why the parliamentarians from the Northeastern states have met me and whatever they said I think all the representative of the Northeast enough time and opportunity is given, they also raise issues in the parliament.”

Stating that the parliamentarians from Northeast have personal bondage with the speaker he said, “Personally also they meet me, my attempt is always that the representatives of the northeastern region should always get protection and always listen to them and solve their problems.”

He further said that the party which gets the mandate of the people it becomes the responsibility to work with accountability.

However, the Lok Sabha speaker also spoke about his lenient attitude towards the opposition members as well so that they too can be encouraged.

“ The opposition or people with different ideologies have lesser number of representatives but our attempt in the parliament that just the numbers are less the functioning of the parliament should not be done, especially those in the opposition should get enough time and opportunity that why more time is allotted top the opposition during the session of the parliament,” he added.
