Shillong, Dec 18: The Meghalaya Retired Deficit School Teachers Association (MRDSTA) called a crucial meeting at the Jail Road Boys School addressing pressing concerns surrounding the pensions and Death-Cum-Retirement Gratuity (DCRG) of retired deficit school teachers.
During the meeting, MRDSTA President ED Nongsiang conveyed the association’s frustration regarding the disparities in DCRG adjustments, emphasising that the government had increased DCRG benefits solely for teachers retiring after 2017.
Nongsiang highlighted the significance of extending this benefit retroactively to teachers retired before 2017 and asserted that the association had formally communicated this demand to the Education Department’s director.
Furthermore, Nongsiang shed light on the protracted battle for pension entitlements, revealing that over 2000 retired teachers in Meghalaya have been awaiting pension benefits for nearly five decades. Despite persistent efforts, the state government has yet to provide a concrete resolution to this prolonged issue.
In their pursuit of justice, the MRDSTA engaged with previous Education Ministers, petitioning for intervention to address the longstanding pension demands. Presently, the association sought the intervention of the current Chief Minister, Conrad Sangma, who, while refraining from explicit assurances, committed to advocating for their cause with the Education Department officials.
Expressing discontent with the lack of governmental action despite submitting memorandums, Nongsiang emphasised the association’s determination to pursue their demands vigorously. Should the government continue to disregard their appeals, Nongsiang hinted at the possibility of staging demonstrations in protest.
“This is our enduring demand, and today’s meeting was convened to reiterate it. If the government fails to heed our concerns, we will have no choice but to resort to agitation,” remarked Nongsiang.
The MRDSTA’s call for equitable treatment in pension disbursements and DCRG adjustments underscores the prolonged struggle of retired teachers in Meghalaya, urging authorities to take decisive action to address these long-standing grievances.
