MSL 2023: Selsella continue unbeaten run by running rampant vs Atong Matgrik

Shillong, June 1: Selsella Sports Association continued their unbeaten run in the Meghalaya State League 2023 with a superb 8-3 victory against Atong Matgrik in Group D at the Chandmari Ground in Tura on Thursday.

All three groups that witnessed action on Thursday are into their final rounds, though none of these games affected the very top of the respective points tables. The other results from Thursday saw Mulait United sign off from MSL 2023 with a handsome 6-1 victory over Rymbai Iawpynsing in Group B, while in Group A Umkseh fought back after being a goal down at half time to split points with Umrit by drawing the game 2-2.

Selsella did take back second place in Group D with Thursday’s victory, which was their second of the tournament to go along with three draws. Saldih Momin (31′, 33′, 45’+2) scored a hat-trick and provided an assist that led to Walseng Sangma’s (4′) early goal. The other four goals were shared out between Ramseng Sangma (22′), Tengsu Sangma (82′) and substitute Sillingston Sangma (85′, 90′).

Atong Matgrik were outdone but not without giving their fans something to cheer about as well, with Walsrang Ch Sangma (35′, 80′) and Silash G Momin (48′) scoring, the latter less than three minutes after coming on as a substitute.

There was another hat-trick at the Kiang Nangbah Stadium in Jowai where Jas Chyrmang (19′, 49′, 66′) tapped in a cross for his first goal in the 19th minute but had to wait until the second half before completing his treble, while Romarius Laban (63′, 64′) and Lency Swer (31′) scored the other goals for Mulait, who took back second place in the group from Ladthadlaboh by 12 points to 10. Rymbai’s lone goal was by substitute Rimitre Lyngdoh (55′).

In Shillong, Daraplang Thangkhiew netted the opening goal in the 34th minute for Umrit with his shot coming off the crossbar before crossing the line and it took until an hour’s play before Umkseh managed to convert one of their many opportunities to equalise via Rilangstar Umdor (60′).

Momentum was well and truly with Umkseh by this point but Umrit found a way to take the lead, with Modesterson Matlai (80′) heading in. This left Umkseh chasing once again and they found a second equaliser six minutes later via Rangkitbok Rani.

Both teams finished their MSL campaigns with 5 points each, with Umkseh taking third place and Umrit fourth on goal difference (-5 to -13).
