MSL 2024: Chipakkore qualify for quarterfinals from Group A; 3 teams tied on points in Group B

Must read

Shillong, Nov 6: Chipakkore qualified for the quarterfinals of the Meghalaya State League (MSL) by beating Pinggera Do·gisik 3-2 in the last Group A match in Tura on Wednesday evening.

A must-win for Chipakkore, they finished the group stage unbeaten with 7 points, dropping Lumsohkhlur to second position with 6. However, Chipakkore found themselves in a spot of bother early in the match as Tengningbirth R Marak (11′) gave an early lead to Pinggera Do·gisik. Few minutes later, Chipakkore suffered another blow as an error by Pobitro Rabha led to own goal at 27th minute.

But Chipakkore quickly regrouped themselves and reignited their belief and launched a counter that was hard to stop. Two goals in 2 minutes by Ginlianhau Tungnung (31′) and Akim R Sangma (33′) put Chipakkore back in the game. Thereafter, the stalemate remained as both teams gave it their all to make it to the next round, and the winner was decided at the dying minutes of the match. Right towards the end of the match Briansbirth G Momin (90+2′) ensured there was no need for a tie-breaker as Chipakkore sealed their much-needed victory.

It is very complicated in Group B after Mawten defeated Riangdo Youth 3-1. Arnest Lyngdoh (3′) gave Mawten the early lead but Kordor Amora (62′) equalised in the second half in Mawkyrwat. It looked like heading for a draw but Arrowstar Wanniang (90’+1) and Wiseman Kharsyiemiong (90’+5) snatched 3 points for Mawten in stoppage time.

This means that Mawten, Khliehmawlieh and Sutnga all have 6 points each in this group. The tournament committee of the MSL will clarify the positions of the teams after a meeting on Thursday.

In Khliehriat, Rymbai Skhenshynriah defeated Mulait United 3-0 thanks to goals from Hesmiki Rymbai (39′, 58′) and Iaishah Bareh (52′) but this was not enough for them to take first place away from defending champions Rangdajied United; both sides have 7 points but RUFC have the better goal difference (+10 to +8). However, R Skhenshynriah will still progress to the quarterfinals as one of the two best second-placed teams.

Finally, in Group F, Pynursla United and Mawmluh were involved in an enjoyable 2-2 draw. Riborlang Dkhar (7′) and Seiborlang Khongmawloh (24′) gave Pynursla United a two-goal lead but Balajiedlang Lyngwa (37′, 82′) struck a brace to ensure that points were shared.

The last of the 36 group stage matches will take place on Thursday in Group C, with Seven United going up against Nangkiew Shaphrang Lumdiengngan in a battle for second place. Both sides have garnered 3 points from two games, with Lumdiengngan boasting of the better goal difference (0 to -2).

Wednesday’s results:
Group A (Tura): Pinggera Do·gisik 2 – 3 Chipakkore
Group B (Mawkyrwat): Riango Youth 1 – 3 Mawten
Group C (Tyrsad): no match scheduled
Group D (Khliehriat): Mulait United 0 – 3 Rymbai Skhenshynriah
