Shillong, Aug 23: TMC leader and former chief minister, Dr. Mukul Sangma, on Friday said the responsibility to appoint the new Leader of Opposition (LO) is vested upon the Speaker of the Assembly.
Asked if the TMC would write to the Speaker on the matter, Mukul said, “There are some things which are considered to be based on the very tradition and practice in the House. So, I don’t find any ambiguity as the whole responsibility is vested upon the Speaker and his office.”
Among parties in the opposition, the TMC has the highest number of five MLAs, while the Congress which also had five MLAs has been reduced to just one MLA after three of them joined the ruling National People’s Party (NPP), while Congress MLA from Gambegre constituency, Saleng A Sangma, resigned as MLA in June this year after he was elected as Lok Sabha MP from Tura parliamentary constituency.
The Voice of the People Party (VPP) is with four MLAs.
