Kohima, Dec 10: The 25th edition of Nagaland’s iconic Hornbill Festival concluded with a grand and colorful ceremony at Kisama on Tuesday, marking the end of a 10-day celebration that showcased the rich cultural tapestry of the Naga people.
The silver jubilee edition drew thousands of visitors from around the world, reaffirming the Hornbill Festival’s status as a premier global event celebrating Naga heritage, unity, and artistic expression.
The closing ceremony featured spellbinding cultural performances and musical showcases, leaving audiences captivated by the vibrancy of Naga traditions. Highlights included the Thele Lu (folk song) performed by the Chakhesang Cultural Troupe. This song, typically sung by village men as they move from place to place, embodies the spirit of communal movement and solidarity.
Another standout was the Titse Nyeh Khidong, a millet harvesting song presented by the Sangtam Cultural Troupe. Renowned for its melodic beauty, the song celebrates the millet harvest and remains a cherished part of Naga folk traditions.
The Phom Cultural Troupe staged a powerful retelling of the Pangital story — a tale of a courageous woman who defeated her enemies using wit and bravery. The performance symbolized strength, resilience, and the enduring power of folklore in Naga culture.
According to an official from Nagaland’s Department of Tourism and Art and Culture, the silver jubilee edition welcomed international partner countries, including Japan, the U.S., the U.K. (Wales), Peru, and Bulgaria. Indian partner states Sikkim and Telangana also participated, adding to the festival’s diversity and global appeal.
The Hornbill Festival, often called the “Festival of Festivals,” has once again demonstrated its role as a bridge between tradition and modernity, fostering cultural exchange while preserving the legacy of Nagaland’s indigenous communities.
