Nagaland Congress President Calls for AFSPA Repeal, Citing Ceasefire and Ongoing Peace Talks

Must read

Kohima, Oct 30: Nagaland Congress President and the state’s lone Lok Sabha MP, S. Supongmeren Jamir stated on Tuesday that the Armed Forces (Special Powers) Act (AFSPA) is unnecessary in Nagaland, as ceasefire agreements with various Naga groups are in place, and peace talks are ongoing.

Addressing the 78th Foundation Day of the Naga Students’ Federation (NSF)—a leading youth organization representing Naga communities across Arunachal Pradesh, Assam, Manipur, and Nagaland—Jamir advocated for the complete removal of AFSPA from Nagaland.

The NSF, established in 1945, has long focused on safeguarding the rights of Naga communities and students.

Jamir highlighted that several Naga groups, including the NSCN (IM), have observed a ceasefire with the government since 1997, with ongoing discussions aimed at a peaceful resolution of the Naga political issue.

“In light of the ceasefire and ongoing dialogue, AFSPA has no place in Nagaland,” Jamir remarked, urging people to speak out against the law and call on the state government to push the Union Government for its immediate repeal in Nagaland.

The Congress leader also encouraged past and current NSF leaders to stay committed to the welfare of the Naga people, the organization’s core mission.

In the meantime, the Ministry of Home Affairs (MHA) recently extended AFSPA in specific districts of Arunachal Pradesh and Nagaland for another six months, effective October 1.
