Shillong, June 23: A delegation from Nagaland on Friday visited the Khasi Hills Autonomous District Council (KHADC) to learn about the role of the autonomous district councils (ADCs) in the protection of the indigenous people and their land.
The 3-member delegation also met and interacted with the members of the KHADC executive committee. Executive Member Teibor Pathaw also took the delegation for quick tour of the Council’s building which housed the executive, legislative and judiciary.
Speaking to the media, Dr Anungla Imdong Phom, Director of Directorate of Under Developed Areas (DUDA), Government of Nagaland said that the delegation while entering Shillong saw the signboard of the KHADC and found it very fascinating and decided to visit the Council.
“We also came to know that this Council is purely for the protection of land, the indigenous people and their culture. That is why we are here. As a Naga, I am a tribal myself, we should protect our heritage and also we should protect our culture and tradition and this is exactly what KHADC is doing,” she said.
Stating that the KHADC is a role model for other NE states, Dr Anungla said that they are also happy to learn that people from other states like Ladak have also come to do their research in the KHADC.
When asked, the Director said that they are interested in doing research on the KHADC because the central government is also mooting the idea of giving autonomous councils in certain parts of Nagaland.
“The executive members were kind enough to give us the book for reference which we will research and whatever is good for our people we will try to implement (in our state),” she said.
