Shillong, April 8: The Northeast Arts Initiative (NAI) on Friday organised a one-day art exhibition with the theme ‘Folklore and its interpretations’ at Shillong College.

The organiser of the art exhibition, Afreen Kraipak Khryiem, said that it is a curated exhibition where there are specific art works that befit a certain theme and various artists have come together for the purpose. The artists displayed their art works under the theme ‘Folklore and its interpretations’ which conceptualised a certain kind of frame work in what ‘Folklore’ means. The organiser also said that the artists, in their art work, talk about how the folklore comes from the ‘oral’ tradition.

“The Khasis are embedded in the idea of spoken word and never had visual practices and these paintings have been painted in terms of the oral tradition itself. The artists visualised the narrative of all their art works from the stories heard and not through any textual sources,” Afreen added.

A display of Noh Kalikai, U Dieng iei, U Klew bad ka Mei ‘ngi art work were seen on display at the exhibition.

Afreen further said, “The Northeast Art Initiative hopes that people come together to be conscious and aware of what art means. We try to bridge that dialogue and create that dialogue between the public and the artist and this is why we conceived this exhibition and will continue to do so in the future.”
