Shillong, Dec 13: The Meghalaya Athletic Association (MAA) on Friday felicitated Rikangku D. Sangma with a cash prize for securing a bronze medal in the Kids’ Javelin event at the 39th National Junior Athletics Championships in Bhubaneswar, Odisha.
Notably, The 12-year-old Rikangku D Sangma, from Karukol Jalaigre village in Garo Hills has scripted history by achieving the medal with an impressive throw of 51.91 meters.
The felicitation ceremony was held at the Conference Room of the Meghalaya State Olympic Association, JN Stadium, Polo. It was attended by MAA President EMH Passah, Secretary Finely L. Pariat, and Vice President Joel Marbaniang, among others.
Speaking at the event, Secretary Finely L. Pariat expressed his delight at Rikangku’s success, noting that he is the second athlete from Meghalaya to win a medal at the National Junior Athletics Championship. He commended the collaborative efforts of the Sports Department and the Association in nurturing young talent, adding that this achievement reflects the “fruits of their hard work.”
Pariat also extended gratitude to Daicy Marwein, the State Athletic Coach, and Plesantly Synnah for their dedication in training Rikangku, especially through online coaching sessions due to his residence in Baghmara. He emphasized that their guidance was instrumental in shaping Rikangku into a medal-winning athlete.
“This bronze medal is not just a personal achievement for Rikangku but a blessing for the state. It demonstrates Meghalaya’s potential to produce world-class athletes,” Pariat said.
The Athletics Federation of India (AFI) also recognised Rikangku as a promising talent with a bright future in sports, further solidifying his position as a rising star in Indian athletics.
It maybe mentioned, Long distance runner Beningstar Lyngkhoi was the last athlete from the State athlete to win a medal at the national level, with a bronze in the U-16 boys’ 2000m race in 1999.
