National Legal Services Authority organises legal awareness programme in Jowai, to sensitize students on Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act

Jowai, May 1: The District Legal Services Authority, West Jaintia Hills District, organized a Legal Awareness Programme on Tuesday, at Kiang Nangbah Government College, Multipurpose Hall, Jowai.

The awareness program was organized under the aegis of the National Legal Services Authority, to sensitize the students on the nuances of the “Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985.”

The event commenced with an introductory speech by S. Phyllei, Chief Legal Aid Defense Counsel. Dr. J. P. Sharma, Associate Professor at Kiang Nangbah Government College, extended a warm welcome to the participants, including students from various colleges and schools.

The primary objective of the program was to raise awareness among educators and students regarding the detrimental effects of substance abuse and to sensitize them on the perils of drug menace and effective measures to combat it.

District and Sessions Judge cum Chairman, District Legal Services Authority, West Jaintia Hills District, N. A. Khan, MHJS, delivered a presentation on the “Narcotic Drugs and Psychotropic Substance Act, 1985,” and “Illicit Trafficking of Drugs.” He emphasized the importance of such initiatives in fostering a legal culture and promoting participation in the formulation and understanding of laws among teachers and students.

Resource person, SI. J. K. Majaw, In-charge of the Anti Narcotic Task Force, West Jaintia Hills District, shared his expertise on the “Role and Functions of Police Officers under NDPS, Act, 1985” through a presentation.

Representatives from Mihmyntdu Community Social Welfare Association TI – IDU, Mr. P. Lamare, and Ms. N. Challam, shed light on “Substance Abuse” with presentation.

The program culminated in an interactive session where participants displayed a keen interest in delving deeper into the intricacies of the Act.
