NCPCR to work with ADCs for protection of child rights in Meghalaya

Shillong, June 23: The National Commission for Protection of Child Rights (NCPCR) has decided to work with the three Autonomous District Councils (ADCs) for protection of child rights in Meghalaya.

“We will work with the ADCs to create awareness about the POCSO Act and to prevent teenage pregnancy,” chairperson of NCPCR, Priyank Kanoongo, told reporters on Saturday.

“We will hold orientation meetings and workshops as well as consultative programs with the ADCs. So in this financial year, we will hold the workshops with all three ADCs about the issues pertaining to the rights of children,” he said.

Kanoongo said the commission has been assured that the government would soon start the process for appointment of the chairperson of the State Commission for Protection of Child Rights (SCPCR).

Further, the NCPCR has also asked the government to conduct a survey of all disabled children in the state.

“There are a total of 4000 disabled children as per data from the education department. We have asked them to converge the data, reconcile the data and get a survey done of all disabled children in the state,” he said adding “If they are lacking of their certificates, of their pensions, expedite the process to provide them with all their entitlements because we have received some information from Rashtriya Bal Sanrakshan which is being run by state health department here in the state. They also are going to screen the children on 4Ds – disability, deficiencies, delays and diseases. They also provided a set of data of screened children with disabilities and diseases, we asked them also to hold a consultative meeting with all the line departments and get examination done of all children by medical board, whoever is entitled for a certificate or any other benefit should provide them,” he added.

Meanwhile, the NCPCR chairperson has also asked the state police to keep vigilance on over 731 pharmacies in the state, which are selling Schedule H and Schedule X drugs, which contain psychotropic substances without proper prescription.
