Guwahati, Jan 4: The North East Petroleum Mazdoor Union (NEPMU) has announced to boycott loading and unloading of petroleum products for 48 hours from January 5, 2024, in solidarity with the truckers currently on strike across the nation against the new laws passed by the Government of India.
In a letter to Indian Oil Corporation Ltd., Bharat Petroleum Corporation Ltd., and Hindustan Petroleum Corporation Ltd., the Union said they will not load and unload any petroleum products from 5 AM of January 5, 2024 to 5 AM of January 7, 2024 to all POL loading locations and LPG bottling plants.
The truckers are protesting against the Section 106 (1) of the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS), which has replaced the Indian Penal Code (IPC), which provides for a punishment of up to five years for causing death by any rash or negligent act not amounting to culpable homicide and Section 106 (2) which provides for a punishment of up to 10 years in hit-and-run cases where a person is killed and the driver escapes without reporting it to police or a magistrate soon after the incident.
Truckers throughout the nation are demanding withdrawal of the provisions under the law and security for the drivers.
